Hagg Wood

Hagg Wood in Holmfirth, Yorkshire is a reserve managed by the Woodland Trust on the edge of the Peak District.

This body of work presents a series of very different visual narratives based on sketches, photographs and video taken on walks in 2016 and 2019.

Tree Songs are a series of moving image works in bright colour, about my experience of walks with the dawn chorus and late afternoon. Inspired by the work of Stanley Brakhage and Adam Scovell.

'Hast Thou Slain the Jabberwock' is an edgy black and white photographic and typographic interpretation of the poem Jabberwocky, evoking some of my experiences of growing up on the 'edgeland outskirts' of Manchester. The style is inspired by the photography of Daido Moriyama, and the dark etchings of Dore, Rembrandt and Goya.

'Dark Peak prints' (forthcoming) develops my sketchbook work and 'noir' photography as images in printmaking media and scraperboard.
